It鈥檚 4 pm and the day is winding down. You鈥檝e just written copy for that new email blast. You haven鈥檛 hit up your leads in a while, so it鈥檚 imperative you get this out. You do a quick glance over of 2.7 seconds and click send. And then鈥 鈥淥h, $#@!鈥 You notice a spelling error.
We鈥檝e all been there. Almost everyone鈥檚 guilty of spelling mistakes in a text message, a Facebook post, or an email. Yet, the first two might only raise the eyebrows of your friends and family. The latter, however, has far-reaching consequences.
According to a study by British online entrepreneur Charles Duncombe, , spelling errors can cost UK businesses millions of pounds in revenue. 鈥淗e measured the revenue per visitor to the website and found that the revenue was twice as high after an error was corrected.鈥
The reality is that a spelling or grammatical error lowers the credibility of your site, its marketing message, and consequently, lessens the likelihood that someone would pay for your product or service. If I鈥檓 on a brand鈥檚 site or social media page and spot a glaring error, there鈥檚 little chance I鈥檓 going to enter in my credit card details on the next page.
Here are some tips to avoid this catastrophic, easy to fix mistake:
-Read it out loud: If your copy doesn鈥檛 sound right when you say it, then there鈥檚 probably something wrong with it.
-Get more eyes on it: The more people who proofread anything, the higher the chances are that someone will notice a mistake.
-Take care of it immediately: If someone points out a mistake, fix it immediately! If it leaves your mind for a second, it might still wind up in the article.
At the end of the day, don鈥檛 let something so simple affect your bottom line. You don鈥檛 want to look like this guy, do you?
